** WARNING: You can not mount this via VESA out of the box like the announcements describe, a special part must be ordered **

 11-5-2008 7-53-29 AM

Now that I have my warning out of the way, Michelle purchased a HP TouchSmart IQ816 for the house so we could hang it on the wall so we could easily interact with the machine to leave notes, add calendar events, review pictures, and watch Blue-ray movies.  I have to coolest wife, I know…

The machine arrived yesterday and man is it big.  I would see why you would not want to have this thing on a desk, but that is the only option you have with it as it comes out of the box.  The VESA mount that everyone reported this thing having is not something you can’t buy at a store and it does not come in the box.  You have to order it from the HP parts site, but they actually have great turn around time.  I ordered mine last night at 6:30pm and paid for next business day morning delivery and it is on the truck this morning set for delivery.  That is fast.  The part ended up only costing me $80 after shipping, but it is definitely something I would have ordered with the machine if I knew about it.  Now you do, so order it if you want to hang your HPTS.

The VESA mount, which can be purchased here, only works for the IQ800 Series and not the previous versions.

Back to the review, the machine is fast, the touch surface is very responsive.  However, the TouchSmart applications need some work.  The music player doesn’t like Zune marketplace music (does hook to iTunes natively) and the Calendar doesn’t like Yahoo, just Google.  These should have been much more configurable.

I am going to look into the SDK to see if I can create a Flickr Touchsmart application, but if all else fails, I will just create a cool Flickr WPF application for it instead.

I will do another review tomorrow or Friday after I get this mounted on the wall and can start using it for the purposes I purchased it for.

I'm comparing this unit to the 804. Trying to figure out if I really need the Blu-Ray, given that I'm going to hang this (thanks for warning!) on the kitchen wall. We don't really hang in the kitchen to watch movies or play games so I keep coming around to the extra $200-300 for Blu-Ray being overkill.

And if we're not doing Blu-Ray, then I really don't need the higher video card and external HDD, right? I'm having trouble envisioning the 'external' HDD, anyway. Does that add bulk to the 816 over the 804?

The only External HDD I can see is a portable media drive at the top of the unit that adds no additional space.

I dont know where they are going with Blue-ray, and I don't want to update this machine for awhile so I opted for the upgrade just to be sure

Windows 7 eh? Yeah, I have the DVDs from PDC, but I will wait until RTM for "Production Machines"... My wife wouldn't go for "but honey, we are testing for Microsoft with our brand new computer"

You could always dual boot it. The library feature alone is cake! I've got it running in a VM right now and while I'm taking the "I'm not trusting you" approach, I haven't had a problem with it yet.

How is it working out now that you've had it for a few weeks?

The computer is awesome. Michelle uses it more than I do and we having used a keyboard or mouse since the first day. The main interface definitely uses the Vista Tablet features, but instead of a stylus, you use your finger.

Building applications definitely sucks right now. Doesn't seem to be much support from HP on this front.

Did you hang it on the wall yet? I read a review elsewhere that the user decided against it, as the unit is so heavy. I'd imagine the VESA mount instructions are pretty explicit about what type of support (heavy bolts into studs/masonry?) is required, right?

It is no heavier than a 40 inch TV so I bought a Motorized VESA mount from Best Buy and just made sure it was mounted to the studs per the instructions. Works like a champ for the past couple weeks. I need to finish the cabling before I post pictures, but it is awesome hanging on the wall.

Bought a touchsmart 804, let it load, tried to use the touchsmart feature - not working. Called HP - they had me uninstall and reinstall the 4 media components - still not working. Returning it to where I purchased it.
