Contest Controversy



This is from the anonymous "El Stevo" via my blog post about the game contest results.

Er, I don't get it. Is this some kind of joke? Bob The Fish is just bad. I don't care what the code is like, the finished product is very very amateurish. It's just a collection of poorly made clones of old games that have been done (better) a million times before. How on earth could you say it had great gameplay? I've only played one other of the entries, but it was far superior to Bob. If I were one of the other entrants I would feal cheated.

Wow, I am just amazed someone would come out and make a comment like this when we ran a month long contest and this game was amazing for just one month in spare time. All the games were amazing. We made our choice based on game play and coding, the blogging was amazing from all contestants. The games were very very close and it was a hard decision. I have to agree with Scoble on his anonymous thoughts and this is very cowardly to make comments like this and not say who you are.

yup... El Stevo is a coward and a jackass. Unfortunately, there's (at least) one in every crowd.

I think you're all being way too exaggeratedly rough on him. I agree hiding because an alt-name is a little underhanded, but he was simply stating his opinion. He didn't do so in the kindest of mannerisms, but he is entitled to his thoughts.

What irked me was that there were no rankings decided. Either you were a winner (XB360) or a non-winner (giftcard); no in-between.

No offense intended at all to Chris Weeks, but a (relatively) simple maze game that saw few blog entries receiving the same prize as Scott Miller's game, which feels more complete, took more work, and saw more blog entries; both of which getting the same prize. I could have whipped up a piece-of-poop in 3 days, put up a few blog entries, and got $100 gift card, if it made no difference in the end. :-/

But that's just me. :)

Sure he is. And we are entitled to rip him a new one because he is a complete ass.

Its good to see how grateful you are that Jeff decided to even have "non-winner" prizes at all. Did you stop to think that those gift cards likely came right out of his wallet?

Yeah, thats not offensive at all. Have you ever made a maze generator? Dealt with pathing? If you haven't, then you have no business trying to decide how "simple" his game is.

Nothing like a friendly contest to bring out the best in people....

Yes, I have delt with maze generation and pathfinding. Neither are a walk in the park. The goal was to make a full game, however. And judging Chris' game as a game, and not by the complexity of the algorithms behind it, it IS 'relatively' simple.

I'm not out to insult anyone, Rick, so please don't take offense. I'm very happy about how hard everyone worked that completed an entry. But it's not on your ground to lash at me like that, especially when it's not even your game. :)

lawl. you'll defend the guy who is actually insulting someone else's game as "freedom of speech", but its not my place to defend the hard work of others when you insult them....

I wasn't defending him. His rudeness was wrong -- I already said that -- but it remains that he CAN state his opinion.

I apologize if I in any way insulted Chris, it was definitely not my intent, but you're being very presumptuous when he hasn't even indicated that he is offended! So please, stop trying to turn this into somesort of schoolyard argument. What you've gotten worked up about wasn't even the focus of my comment. I apologize again to Chris if he took offense, so please drop it.

No offense taken until you implied (or maybe I just inferred) that it was a piece of 'poop.' I suppose that offended a wee bit. But I have a pretty thick skin, so no harm done and all is forgiven, no hard feelings and all of that.
You are entitled to express your opinion after all.

I agree that my game was not as 'complicated' nor was my blogging as complete as some of the other contestants.
However, I did it for fun and within the time my life allows, not expecting any fame or glory, or even an Xbox.

I am sorry you are regretting the effort you put into your game, when you could have just whipped up a piece of poop.

Consider it dropped.

Now I see why everyone seemed so tiffed by what I said. Bad phrasing on my behalf, I suppose. You misread what I meant. I wasn't referring to your game at all in the latter sentence. :)

I was stating that I could have made somesort of crummy entry -- like Admiral Overalls with no title screen/menu, only 1 or 2 enemies, and 3 levels -- and still have gotten the same giftcard as me having done all of the other additions to my game.

Sorry for that. I can see that, now, reading it over again, that it was wide open for interpretation in such a manner.

I still don't see your point, you were competing in a contest of one winner, and that was George. John and I forked up the cash to buy the gift cards because everyone did an amazing job and we wanted to give everyone something. We never stated anyone would be treated differently if they didn't get first place. No one scrapped anything together, all the games were well thought out. If someone did, we wouldn't give them a card.

It is amusing how people react to contests. We had five people in this contest. The game rules only stated one winner. Even under the best circumstances people will grumble a little bit about not winning. But with one winner it is pretty straight forward.
However, it is very funny when suddenly the other four get consolation prizes (which were totally unexpected and very appreciated).
Now suddenly we are all egalitarian and equal but "some are more equal than others" (note my reference, LOL).
You know, I think that Jeff may be doing a Psychology Master's thesis on our reactions to the judging process...
Thanks again guys. I really enjoyed this contest and I have many people encouraging me to polish the Bloodletting, create more cards and release it shareware, which is something I might consider.
