Blog Request Ethics



I started Geekswithblogs.net as an alternative to weblogs.asp.net. We would promote Geekiness which is 50% technical / 50% personal. The service is free and has been pretty successful. However, lately the blog request I have been getting are rude and demanding. An example from ONE REQUEST is "Hence I request you to provide me a blog here" and "expecting a fast and positive reply". Now come on. This is a free service, but I am not your bitch. I suggest to individuals who want to request something from someone else for free to be polite and make sure you are phrasing your request correctly. Just pissed me off enough to stop the chapter system for the book club and tell you about it. Back to work.

One thing to keep in mind, that may not be the reason behind the example, but sometimes when English is not someone's first language, things come out a little differently than we are used to. So what may sound rude to us may not necessarily have been intended that way. Although, it could just have been rude, too!

Julie has a good point, but your's is equally so. "Free" in the GWB's case equals "when I have time." Now, that individual could have gotten one almost immediately along the lines of "request received and it will be processed in order of priority. I set the priorities."

Julie does have a good point, but I dont think so in this case. Normally you can pick up a lack of translation skills, but this one is well versed.

hey, I can't help being a Pollyanna. I *did* suggest that perhaps the person was in fact just being completely rude! My hubbie teases me for having a hard time grokking that things like this are possible... ;-)

"expecting a fast and positive reply" ?? :)) That sounds like something you'd learn in English class in India. I can bet the guy who wrote you that one was a desi and was trying to sound extra polite by peppering his sentences with redundant (and inappropriate) adjectives !

Don't get mad, Julian. The poor sod has directly translated Hindi into English.

Man, a little thin in the skin there Jeff? I can think of far worse things to say.

He may have heard tell of your efficient and altruistic nature that is famed in song and story and thus his expectation of an expedient and positve outcome was a realistic one.
