Since installing Option Pack 4 for Windows NT to get IIS running Classic ASP, we have all felt the lack of ease from Microsoft to actually create websites on a developer box. There has always been an expressed need to not need a custom configured machine to install Visual Studio and create web sites right away. Why must we open Windows Configuration and add all these pieces if a solution for our OS could be added to the development product line. My first development job was 10 years ago when I worked...

I have recently needed a screen capture tool for my Mac and remembered that TechSmith had recently launched SnagIt, the only screen capture tool for Windows in my eyes, for the Mac. SnagIt is an amazing tool and the fact that it comes with an image editor makes it that much nicer. Well needless to say, TechSmith again has out done themselves with Snagit for the Mac. The interface very much fits the Mac UX. I was seriously worried about that because the Windows version definitely fit Windows well...

Well I have been using WVPC for Windows 7 RTM for about a week now and there are a few things I like and a few things I don’t. First off, why at the end of 2009 do we still not have a “multiple monitor” story that doesn’t require me to put quotations around the words. This RDP style of one giant monitor span across your two monitors is not a solution, it hasn’t been since it came out. Secondly, What *flicker* is *flicker* up *flicker* with *flicker* all *flicker* the *flicker* flickering? I have...

I have been converting my current client’s development environment to a VPC instead of taking over my main machine as we did to get the project kicked off. I decided to go with Windows Virtual PC now that it has RTMed, but quite a bit has changed. Once I had Windows 7 installed and VS 2008 configured, I started looking for a multiple monitor solution for VPCs. In the past, I had just lived with the limitation of running virtual and not getting the benefit of dual monitors. This time I wanted something...

As part of an effort we are doing at AJI Software to better instruct our bloggers on how to use the software, we will be launching a series of Screencasts, using Camtasia Studio from TechSmith, to help with a few areas of site. The first screencast is on Tagging using Windows Live Writer and Geekswithblogs.net. If you experience difficulty with the audio making weird blips and beeps, check out this post from TechSmith. On my MacBook Pro, running Vista Business, I had to go back to revision 39 of...

(click to larger view) Oh Zune, I want to love you, but you make it so difficult some times. Well most of the time my Zune is great. The device is solid (now that my battery isn't draining even when I turn it off with the firmware from 2 days ago) and the marketplace has a great selection. The podcast features are getting there (it would be nice to mark as played from the device) but I have been having some major problems for the past few days. When I got my MacBook Pro, one of the first applications...

My favorite Regular Expression resource, RegExLib.com, received a very nice face lift and enhancement recently and I thought you would like to know. For sometime now, the site was sort of broken, search features were not working, paging through the expressions were flaky and it looked like it was on the verge of going away. However, it looks like Steve Smith and the team were making some major enhancements and I am really excited to run into my next RegEx issue and being able to use this resource....

No the world is not ending, well I don't know if it is or isn't, but John and myself switched to MacBook Pros from our Toshibas. These machines are amazing. I have never been so excited to work with Vista. Don't worry, I am not a switcher. While I downloaded Vista Business from MSDN, I used OS X Leopard and I had the same reaction that I did with my original Apple PowerBook, "What can I do?" I was literally bored on a computer and that takes a lot. Those awesome applications they talk about on the...

46,732 Days and 15 Hours later I should have a 50mb file transferred, according to Vista. Does anyone else think there should be a condition in the time remaining procedure that says: if(timeRemaining.Days > 100){ throw new SomethingIsMessedUpBigTimeW... "Developers Name Here");} Technorati tags: Vista, Messages...

I found this site today (guessing some of you have seen it to) and I must say I love the idea. It analysis your Vista Score data and gives you a nice little HTML blob to share your Vista score on your blog as well as other tools. You can also view top performers in graphics and processors. Very cool! Here is my score (laptop): .score, { font-weight:bold; font-decoration:none; font-size: x-large; cursor: hand; background-image: url(http://www.shareyoursco... color: #ffffff;...

With the help of this post, I am now listening, downloading, and syncing my Zune and the Zune Marketplace on Vista. Amazing to see these two products working together. I have the following apps running at the same time with no performance issues I used to have on XP: Word 2007 open (writing my portion of a book) Couple IE windows Virtual PC 2007 with 1024MB allocated to a running machine (Windows 2003 and SharePoint 2007) Outlook 2007 Zune player listening to Blue October (amazing CD!) Windows Live...

Well I am still downloading (or attempting to, not looking so good) Vista from MSDN, but I am not sure how I am going to use it. You see (and have probably already heard) that the Vista team is on one side of the campus and Zune team is on another. The distance is so far that they were unable to communicate and test products together. So the Zune doesn't work on Vista. Now since Business Customers don't use Zunes, they will release an update just in time for the Vista Home release in January. So...

All you subscribers come and get it…Office 2007 RTM is available for download. This post is coming from Word 2007 and the new blogger feature. I haven't smiled this much for software since PDC 2003 and when we got the first bits of Longhorn (Vista)

After a machine of mine became consumed by a project, I have been building a new set of disks latest for my use during new projects. I always build my VPCs using differencing disk. For those of you new to this concept, it allows you to build a disk off of a parent disk and all changes at that point will go to the new disk. With the environment changing on us constantly with different releases of products, it is critical for you to get your project up quick. Here is my example: As you can see, I am...

I am in love! I downloaded the MaxiVista trial today because I am onsite at a client with 2 notebooks, but only the monitors attached to the machines. I needed more space! MaxiVista is a product that allows you to extend your desktop without an extra monitor attached to the machine, but another computer with a monitor. This means if your have two laptops, you can make one of them a slave monitor to the other, giving you dual monitors. Amazingly the lag is almost not noticeable since it uses the network...

Just absolutely amazing!!! John and I loaded our TabletPC with Vista and Office 2007 Beta 2 without VPC and I must say, I really like what I see. Most Tablets, including ours, don’t have the video needed for Aero, but the user experience is still much better than XP. Anyone else using Vista and Office with a dedicated daily notebook or tablet? To blog inside Word using .Text, you need to update the XmlRpc assembly used. [Post made from Word 2007]
