Since installing Option Pack 4 for Windows NT to get IIS running Classic ASP, we have all felt the lack of ease from Microsoft to actually create websites on a developer box. There has always been an expressed need to not need a custom configured machine to install Visual Studio and create web sites right away. Why must we open Windows Configuration and add all these pieces if a solution for our OS could be added to the development product line. My first development job was 10 years ago when I worked...
Here is the list of Zone ID’s for the Blank WebPart Page (BlankWebPartPage.aspx") that is part of the Publishing Portal with MOSS 2007: TitleBar Header TopLeftRow TopRightRow CenterLeftColumn CenterColumn CenterRightColumn Footer RightColumn I was in need of these and wasn’t able to find them with a simple search on Google so I wanted to share them with you. To get a list of WebPartZone objects for a page that a webpart lives on can be done with the following code: foreach (WebPartZone zone in this.WebPartManager.Zones)...
In a bold move, Microsoft decided to rename SharePoint one more time to SharePoint 2010 for the next version. Check out these two articles on the change, but it looks like the detachment from Office does not mean it will be less feature rich with the integration with Office, much like portals weren’t removed when it went from SPS to MOSS. I am excited to see the name change, but we really need a new acronym as trendy as MOSS was. MSP, SPX, not sure. No name has been released for WSS, but my bet is...
The event was a lot of fun. The audience was prepared with tons of questions and the presenters had some great topics. Clint Edmonson mentioned the idea of doing a MOSS Camp in Kansas City, and I think we will definitely look into it after Coders 4 Charities. Technorati Tags: MOSS Camp,St. Louis,SharePoint...
Looks like I will have the pleasure of speaking at the St. Louis MOSS Camp in April. The event looks awesome, and I wish we could draw a large enough crowd of speakers and attendees in Kansas City, but I don't think we are there yet. I will hopefully be presenting on WCM, but I left to options open to the organizers. If you are in the area, I would highly suggest this event. List of Current Topics: MOSS UX Customization Best Practices SharePoint 2007 Custom Workflow SharePoint 2007 Custom Web Parts...

In the spirit of posts about joining the different communities, I wanted to chime in. So the question is should I blog? My answer is absolutely. Even if you only contribute a post ever month, I still feel it is a worthwhile activity to participate in. I see a lot of registrations from individuals on Geekswithblogs.net where they state that they read blogs all the time and feel it is time to give back and I think that is excellent. You don't have to aim to be the best blogger in the sphere, nor do...
Our first podcast of the event was with a great organization named City House and the development team from Sogeti. The mission of City House is to strengthen the community by helping children, youth and families resolve physical and emotional crises. They provide a complementary suite of intervention and prevention services at no cost to their clients. To find out more about how this project was designed, review the proposal here. I have been re-awarded the MVP status for the 4th year. This year is different as I am now a SharePoint MVP where in the past I was an XML MVP. The transfer process was not as difficult as I thought it would be and I would like to thank Rafael Munoz, my previous lead, and April Spence, my new lead, for all the help when I asked to move to another designation. It wasn't a straight move like I asked and it was done, I had to go through the qualification tests again, but I knew what to expect. If you...
No the world is not ending, well I don't know if it is or isn't, but John and myself switched to MacBook Pros from our Toshibas. These machines are amazing. I have never been so excited to work with Vista. Don't worry, I am not a switcher. While I downloaded Vista Business from MSDN, I used OS X Leopard and I had the same reaction that I did with my original Apple PowerBook, "What can I do?" I was literally bored on a computer and that takes a lot. Those awesome applications they talk about on the...

This morning we had the opportunity to talk with Steve Loethen, Microsoft Partner Evangelist, about the new brain child CodeToLive.net. Steve talks about why the site was formed, what the target audience is, and how you can get involved. One of the really cool aspects of this site is it is one of the first Channel 9 shows that is developer driven and not Microsoft driven. Definitely check out the show and the site. On a side note, check out the latest show with myself, John Alexander, and Rob Foster...
Thursday night we will be holding a meeting for the Office Developer User Group of Kansas City covering Web Content Management in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and I would like to invite anyone in the area to attend. As we are a new user group, AJI Software is donating an XBox 360 as the raffle prize of this month. Anyone who attended last month's meeting will get an extra ticket in the raffle, however, you must attend to win. To register, visit the Office Developer User Group's website...
This month, John and I are launching the Office Developer User Group of Kansas City on August 9th at 6:00pm. The site still need a little work (ok, a lot of work), but that won't stop us from having some great meetings. Here is the details for this month's meeting: Topic: Introduction to SharePoint Workflow Speakers: Jeff Julian, John Alexander of AJI Software Date: Thursday, August 9th (Each meeting will be on the 2nd Thursday of the month) Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm Location: Centriq Foss, 87th &...
Tonight, John and I will be presenting on SharePoint 2007 at the .NET User Group in Kansas City. Along with this presentation we will be launching the Office Developer User Group of Kansas City to add an additional focus on Office and SharePoint development in the area. If you are around tonight, please stop by and have some free food and good conversation. TriCom Technical Services will be the food sponsor this evening so be sure and thank them while you are there. The meeting starts at 6:00pm,...
Dru Sellers recently tagged me on what I would do to become a better developer so here it goes: Get Geekswithblogs.net on SubText 1.9.5 - Running a growing software consulting firm is hard. Even with John at the helm with me, it takes a lot of time. This is one of the first acts I need to become a better developer due to the fact that is will require a high level of involvement with reviewing the code changes and merging the differences. Plus there will be an additional need to really get the most...
I love SharePoint and after the book was published and I started reading the competitive books, I love it even more.. With that, I am going to start focusing this blog on SharePoint related data, and of course Geekswithblogs news as well. With that, I definitely want to stick to the development side of the house and wanted to know what you would like to see extending in SharePoint 2007? More Blogs and Wiki features than the community is already offering? Tutorials on Features, Web Parts, etc? Let...
March 2-6, 2008, I should be in Seattle at the Microsoft Office SharePoint Conference 2008 event. I don't know if they heard me when I mentioned the php/mySql driven site (probably not), but now the site is actually a SharePoint 2007 site. Hopefully more information will come out about the event, but you can register to get more information here. Technorati tags: SharePoint, MOSS, SharePoint Conference, Conference, Seattle...
I am kind of late to announce this, but our book is out...and selling quite well. One problem with the first print was that Wrox accidentally left out the acknowledgments. They have stated that it will make it in the next print later this summer. Since we actually will have more than one print, I am excited. Jim Minatel from Wrox stated, "This book was one of two or three HOT SharePoint titles too hot for the Tech Ed bookstore to keep in stock last week. It's not surprising to see the Amazon rank...
Microsoft announced a SharePoint Conference in March of 2008 and when you visit the site, the only link is to register for updates. On the page URL for the registration confirmation page is http://www.mssharepointconf... Not only are they using mySQL, but the page is built using PHP!!!! Don't let this detour you from going to the conference however, I am sure it will be a great event and I plan to attend. Technorati tags: SharePoint, Conference, Microsoft, PHP, mySQL...
Well, Rob Foster, Murray Gordon, John Alexander, and Myself have all been working on competitive SharePoint 2007 books this past Fall/Winter and they are all being published around the same time. Personally I would suggest purchasing MINE first, but then definitely support the other guys. Honestly, these guys are my friends and I communicate with them frequently so I hope their books sell well. Rob and I have vented to each other via IM about SharePoint when we ran into issues serveral times. Hopefully...
Wrox, publisher of the upcoming Professional SharePoint 2007 Development book John and I worked on, has published an excerpt from the book covering Creating Content Type Metadata for SharePoint 2007 Document Management Solutions. I am very excited to see this book hit the shelves. It has been in the works (from conversation all the way up to printing) since TechEd 2006 Boston when John and I started talking to Jim Minatel about the title. Last night at 3 AM, CST, I published my final chapter for the upcoming Wrox SharePoint 2007 Development title John and I have working on recently. Writing is definitely an interesting process. Thats all I will say about that. After reviewing the other chapters in the book, I am really looking forward to this title being printed. It is available via Pre-Order on Amazon right now if you want to grab your copy as soon as it comes out. Now that this is behind be, I plan to start publishing more posts...
Take a look, Microsoft has created a public SharePoint site and one of the MSDN/TechNet Bloggers has moved over there. I wonder how long before the others start porting their blogs over? It really makes sense to me to have Microsoft bloggers using the SharePoint 2007 blogging functionality. Microsoft.com was the first part to show that SharePoint can scale and moving their blogs over will just prove the point even more. Congrats on the move! Technorati tags: SharePoint, Blogs, Microsoft, Move...
With the help of this post, I am now listening, downloading, and syncing my Zune and the Zune Marketplace on Vista. Amazing to see these two products working together. I have the following apps running at the same time with no performance issues I used to have on XP: Word 2007 open (writing my portion of a book) Couple IE windows Virtual PC 2007 with 1024MB allocated to a running machine (Windows 2003 and SharePoint 2007) Outlook 2007 Zune player listening to Blue October (amazing CD!) Windows Live...
Subscribers, you can now go to MSDN and download SharePoint 2007 Standard and Enterprise
After a machine of mine became consumed by a project, I have been building a new set of disks latest for my use during new projects. I always build my VPCs using differencing disk. For those of you new to this concept, it allows you to build a disk off of a parent disk and all changes at that point will go to the new disk. With the environment changing on us constantly with different releases of products, it is critical for you to get your project up quick. Here is my example: As you can see, I am...
Now that the site has been live for a month now, we are really starting to see some compelling posts about topics that will be covered at TechEd. One thing to keep in mind, this site is not just for attendees, it is for anyone interested in what Microsoft will be announcing and talking about during the event. The hot topics include Office 2007, SharePoint, .NET 2.0, Atlas, Exchange Server, etc. If you haven't checked out the site, I highly suggest you do and start aggregating the feed to get the...
It looks like Microsoft will discontinue FrontPage at the end of the year with the release of other tools for SharePoint 2007 development/maintenance. It has been a pain to need this tool installed to edit SharePoint so I am glad to hear this news
