To start, I love Red Gate Software’s Tools. I have loved them since the first time I started using SQL Backup and SQL Compare when I first started Geekswithblogs.net. I think they create quality products and have been a “Friend of Red Gate” for years. So know that this review is coming from a “fan boy” of sorts. What is SQL Compare? Well the name sort of says it all, this product compares SQL databases. But not just databases, but backups, snapshots, and source control using their product SQL Source...

We did the database migration this morning and everything seems to work perfectly. The environment is about 5x what our previous server configuration was and we moved from SQL Server 2000 to 2008. Ping me if you see any issues because that was a little too easy

Over the next month we will be migrating the Geekswithblogs system over to new hardware with a platform upgrade to Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. This upgrade will force us to make some changes that are needed to the database and others that are just because (like ASP.NET 2.0 to ASP.NET 3.5). What does this mean if you are a blogger? Hopefully nothing. The idea is to migrate the data/code to the new servers with dummy IPs and then when we are ready, swap the IPs with the new boxes and BAM,...

Kent Tegels, of Enjoy Another Sandwich, joined us yesterday to talk about SQL Server and adoption amongst developers and DBAs. During this podcast, Steve Loethen, Microsoft Partner Evangelist, takes on the role as co-host. In this show we talk a lot about CLR Stored Procedures and where they really fit. Kent is really excited about Spatial support in SQL Server 2008 and it definitely comes through when you talk to him. Listen to Kent discuss SQL Server! We had a great show yesterday with Bill Vaughn, author and former VB project manager, talking about SQL Server and how developers should look at later versions of SQL Server. Read more about Bill here and BetaV Corporation. If you haven't made the move to SQL Server 2005, Bill discusses with us what is good and bad about the product as a developer and talks through some of the issues you might have during the migration Listen to Bill Vaughn discuss SQL Server! After a machine of mine became consumed by a project, I have been building a new set of disks latest for my use during new projects. I always build my VPCs using differencing disk. For those of you new to this concept, it allows you to build a disk off of a parent disk and all changes at that point will go to the new disk. With the environment changing on us constantly with different releases of products, it is critical for you to get your project up quick. Here is my example: As you can see, I am...

Anyone else hate when you right-click on SQL Server Enterprise Manager, “Help Topics” is where “Close” should be. I don't know how many time I have freaking open up SQL Help when I really just wanted to close the damn thing! If you have Yukon installed, does it do the same thing
